SIR MOKSHAGUNDAM VISVESVARAYA
Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya also known as Sir MV was a civil engineer in India. He was born on 15 September 1860 in Muddenahalli in Karnataka. He was the chief engineer of Krishna Sagara Dam in Mysore city and was one of the chief engineers in Hyderabad. In 1917 Visvesvaraya established the Government Engineering college in Bengaluru which was later named as University Visvesvaraya College. Visvesvaraya invented the block systems and automated doors.
He also designed the floodgates and it was installed in Khadakawasla Reservoir in Pune in 1903. Some important time :
1. Assistant Engineer in Mumbai - 1885
2. Executive Engineer in Surat - 1896
3. Executive Engineer for irrigation in Pune - 1899
4. Superintending Engineer - 1907
5. Visited countries like Egypt, Canada, United States and Russia.
6. Retired from British Service - 1909
Sir MV was also very clever. This is a story about the cleverness of Sir MV.
On a long train journey, Sir MV was keeping his head out of the train, lying in the window which is in right side of him. After sometime he slept.
Then suddenly he woke up and pulled the chain so that it stops. When a ticket collector asked that why did you pulled the chain Sir MV replied: 'Because, I found that the train was in danger as the track was broken'. The ticket collector went out and saw that the track was broken some distance away. He came and asked that how do you know? Sir MV replied 'When I was lying on the window I head a pattern of sound in the train's movement. Then there was a variation in the pattern so I found that the track was broken !
Every year Sir Visvesvaraya's birthday was celebrated as Engineer's Day. He was died on 12 April in Bengaluru. He was awarded the highest honour of India called as Bharat Ratna.
