 The Biography of Helen Keller

Helen Keller was born on 27 June,1880 in United states of America, Alabama. She is known for her courage and determination. Helen's mother's name is Kate and her father's name is Arthur. She was born as a healthy baby but, when she was 19 months old, she had a serious illness which made her deaf and blind.

Her biggest problem was how to let others know what she needed. So, her parents took her to a woman named Anne Sullivan. She taught Helen many words using a method. For example, if she wants to teach the letter 'water' to Helen, she will keep Helen's hand in water and in other hand she will trace the alphabets in her palm like W-A-T-E-R. Using this method Anne taught Helen hundreds of words. Now, Helen could recognise words.

Helen studied in Braille which is a system for blind people. Sarah Fuller, who is a teacher for deaf taught Helen how to speak. Sarah would put Helen's hand in her lips. By feeling the movement of the lips, Helen started to speak words and full lines!

Helen was a clever girl. She soon learnt how to eat and dress herself. Helen went to study in Radcliffe college in Massachusetts when she was 16 years old. Helen never married and didn't had any children. She also learnt 5 languages in the meantime and travelled throughout the world.

In the Second World War, Helen helped many blind and deaf people. She also encouraged many soldiers to be brave and supported them.

Helen wrote many books such as,
  • 'The World I live in'
  • 'The story of my life'
  • 'Light in my Darkness'
  • 'Teacher:Anne Sullivan Macy'

though she was deaf and blind. She also won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1953 and created many schools for blind people. She promised the Minister of Education in Egypt, that she would create many secondary schools for blind and deaf people and give them college education. One of her school is located in Jerusalem, Israel.
