What is BMI index

Body mass index (BMI) helps  to estimate the total body fat.It is calculated by dividing your weight  by  your  height .  It helps to determine whether  your  weight  is  normal,underweight,overweight or obese. 

If your BMI is 

  • Under 20 – underweight 
  • 20 to 25 – normal
  • 26 to 30 –  overweight.
  • Over 30 –  obese

The higher your BMI, the higher your risk for diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure etc.If you are underweight then you are exposed to risk for diseases such as diabetes, gallstones, breathing problems, and certain cancers.

BMI is calculated for adults and children using seperate calculator.BMI cannot be calculated for kids below 2years.BMI calculation may be inaccurate for athlete,pregnant and breastfeeding women ,physically disabled  and for people who are very frail.

BMI  underweight and  overweight both will cause health problems, especially for people with low physical activity.

Note:A person’s waist circumference is a better predictor of health risk than BMI.
